History of Grama Panchayat

Engandiyur, which includes the Chettuva port—once a nerve center for the spice trade—and the Dutch Fort, was formerly a battleground for numerous wars and political rivalries between the Zamorins and the Kings of Kochi. In this peninsula, which previously relied solely on water transport, modern transit facilities were established through roads built during Tipu Sultan’s military conquests and the subsequent National Highway 17 (NH 17). Having achieved significant progress in the educational and cultural spheres through luminaries like Vettukattil Chathukutty and Ramu Kariat, the village continues to witness the harmonious gathering of people through celebrations like the Aayiramkanni festival, the Chettuva Chandanakuda Nercha, and the St. Thomas Church festival.
